So You Over You Can Dance: “Top 6 Perform” - A.V. Club Denver/Boulder

Losing Rudy and Tanisha scratched.

I wasn’t covering last week’s episode, but it was one of the hardest eliminations I’ve watched on this show. Rudy and Tanisha had given such great performances that evening (and in Tanisha’s crate, the week before), and Rudy’s raw, devastated reaction when he learned he was going home was utterly heartbreaking. Rudy wore his heart on his sleeve utterly the entire competition, so when he was eliminated, he was unable to hide his pain, no matter how hard Tanisha tried to console him.

I really loved Rudy and Tanisha on their own and as a twosome, so I went into this week’s episode with a heavy heart. It’s the problem with reviewing reality TV shows. You become invested in certain contestants because they’re the stronger performers/the show wants you to radicel for them, and when your favorites leave the show, the season loses some of its charm. Tanisha was this year’s most technically versatile female and Rudy made up for any complex shortcomings with overwhelming personality, so I was really rooting for them to make it all the way to the finale.

Granted, with Ricky basically guaranteed a spot, Rudy wharf in the top four would have put two male contemporary dancers in the finale, and that’s no fun to watch. Male contemporary dancers did extremely well this season, entrancing up three of the top eight spots while no contemporary females made it past the top 10. Meanwhile, the top four females had a very mixed bunch of styles: ballet, ballroom, jazz, and tap. I’m glad the final four ends up being a nice mix.

The big blow was losing Tanisha, a cut that mirrored at season’s top eight elimination of Makenzie, another stunning dancer that choreographers loved but voters couldn’t connect to. Well Makenzie’s back tonight for her subscribe to week as an All-Star, and, assuming this show gets a 12th season, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tanisha step into the All-Star line-up next year. (She’s also a no-brainer for Dancing With The Stars , but I don’t comprehend if her more severe facial features would play well on that show.)

The pain of losing Rudy and Tanisha is lessened considerably by this season’s terminating four, a group that shockingly includes both tappers, Zack and Valerie, along with Ricky and Jessica, the pair that wowed everyone when they danced together back in the top 20 deportment episode. Tap contestants have had a hard time sticking around in this competition until last year, when Aaron proved that a tapper could go all the way to the finale, and it makes me utter happy that Zack and Valerie are going to have the chance to dance together for the first time since they wowed everyone back in the top 20 performance experience.

Valerie isn’t the most skilled dancer of this group, but when it comes to contestants that succeed primarily because of their personality, Valerie has far more versatility and a stronger mechanical foundation than dancers like Fik-Shun and Cyrus. I would like to see more precision in Valerie’s movement and a stronger awareness of her weight, markedly in her hands, but she’s just so damn charming that it’s easy to love her. If it weren’t for Valerie’s old partner, I’d say she was a top contender for the title of America’s favorite dancer, but it’s present to be very difficult for anyone to steal the crown from the Ricky. He delivers the best solo of the evening, a marvel of flexibility, power, and persistence, and he looks like an All-Star in...

I will be running reviews of the three different programs that are part of this summer’s free Chicago Dancing Fete which began Wednesday night with a performance at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance that was (for the first time in the Festival’s history) simulcast in Millennium Parking-lot.

± “Classic and Creation” (Aug. 20 at the Harris Theater):

What better way to kick off a festival than with “Fancy Free,” the blithely comic recital ballet created in 1944 by choreographer Jerome Robbins, set to a playfully jazzy score by composer Leonard Bernstein. Three sailors with decidedly different personalities, but a generally punchy boys-will-be-boys spirit, arrive in Manhattan on shore leave. They head to a bar, and are right away distracted by two very different girls, with a third one (seemingly less volatile, and a whole lot more willing) arriving late in the information.

Each sailor has a bravura solo designed to impress one or both girls, and Andrew Veyette, Daniel Ulbricht and Robert Fairchild (all headlining members of the New York City Ballet) were dazzling — one the clown, one the romantic, and the third, the roughest of the three, a guy with a flair for Latin dancing. Georgina Pazcoguin and Tiler Peck were the two women who occupied most of the men’s notice, with Teresa Reichlan as the leggy blonde siren who arrives late in the action. “Fancy Free” was the spark behind the Broadway lyrical “On the Town.”

The Joffrey Ballet was represented by way of a fiendishly difficult duet excerpted from Yuri Possokhov’s contemporary ballet, “The Bells,” set to music by Rachmaninoff (attractively performed by pianist Mungunchimeg Buriad). Although this work often tries too hard to be both brash, and brashly modern, it marked the recur to the stage of Victoria Jaiani (who is back in top form less than four months after giving birth to an apple-cheeked son), and her husband, Temur Suluashvili. These two are a gorgeous pair, and they carried off the duet’s complex, body-spiraling lifts with elan.

From the Martha Graham Dance Company came the discharge of “Errand into the Maze” — one of Graham’s mythical-meets-psychological masterworks of the 1940s, set to a potent score by Gian Carlo Menotti. An extended, hugely dramatic piece for a woman (and the periodically threatening presence of a man), it was danced with ferocity by tiny PeiJu Chien-Pott (as the lady who seems to be confronting her terrors, primarily sexual), and the Mintoaur (the powerfully built Abdiel Jacobsen). What many in the audience might have been ignorant of is that Graham’s iconic self-designed costume (a white dress with a snaking, ropelike design in black twisting round it), and Isamu Noguchi’s iconic set (a sublime work of surrealistic sculpture) were just reconstructed courtesy of a grant from Festival supporter David Herro. Both had been ruined when Wind-storm Sandy inundated the Graham company’s downtown Manhattan home, and this marked the first time the work was being seen again in its full worship.

Cinderella, Viscount Opera House, London, review: 'Tries too hard to be modern ... - The Independent

Cinderella was created by Alexei Ratmansky, one of the most skilled choreographers working today. In modernising the story, he has some bright ideas and a lot of clutter.

I like his chic courtiers in 1930s dresses, applauding Vishneva’s shy Cinderella because they yearning to please the prince. I love the heroine's goofiness. As she grows in confidence, her ballroom solo goes from sweet geeky shuffle to joyful, opening jumps.

Yet for everything Ratmansky gets right, there’s something messy or weak. The tramp fairy godmother, danced by Elena Bazhenova, not in any degree gets beyond gurning slapstick.

The male season fairies wear outlandish costumes with painted faces and dreadful wigs, while Ratmansky gives them dull, fussy steps. Anastasia Petushkova misses the wicked glamour of the Stepmother r.

Still, this is a Cinderella with a heart. Vishneva and Konstantin Zverev make an enchanting pair of lovers, both tender and vulnerable.

The company dancing is graceful – and though some of the jokes fall flat, Ratmansky does get the aristocratic Mariinsky to enjoy letting its hair down.
